How long will my child be in therapy?

Every child is different! The length of time your child spends in therapy depends on what they are working on, the severity of the disorder, how frequently they practice at home, and if there are any relevant medical diagnoses (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, etc.). Talk to your therapist about the progress your child is making in therapy and what steps to take at home to encourage faster progress.

How does speech therapy work?

Private speech therapy is individualized to each child. Generally speaking, speech therapy works in a progression. Your therapist will determine the long and short term goals that your child will work toward each session. Your therapist takes data on your child's short term goals to determine when they have been met. Once a goal is met, your child will work on the next step toward meeting their long term goal. Articulation therapy is a good example of how goals will progress. First your child may work on their target sound in isolation, once they've met that goal they will work on their target sound at the word level, sentence level, and so forth.

Yes. We offer travel sessions within Alexandria, VA in addition to office sessions and virtual sessions. We can travel to your home, your child's preschool, daycare, or private school. We cannot complete sessions at public schools. Travel session availability is limited. If you are interested in travel sessions please give us a call

Why does my child need private speech therapy if they get therapy in school or through early intervention?

Private speech therapy is different from the therapy your child may receive at school or with the county. Due to high school caseloads, students are often placed in groups with other students who may or may not be working on similar goals. Private therapy provides your child with one on one attention and individualized sessions. Services offered through the county may be recommended once or twice per month. Private therapy believes in the importance of consistent weekly sessions in order to maximize the progress your child can make. Private therapy is scheduled on a weekly basis, and may be offered up to 3x/week.

Although private therapy is much different than school or county-based services, we encourage families to do a combination of all available therapy when possible. We are happy to speak with your child's school or county therapists to ensure a consistent plan of care.

Will I be involved in my child's therapy?

Yes! We encourage our parents to observe and participate in sessions so they can understand what their child is working on and the best ways to work toward their goals.
